Quartiere La strada tra Palazzo Vecchio e gli Uffizi ha un nome molto particolare: via della Ninna, "via della ninna nanna", come la canzone che i genitori cantano per far addormentare i bambini. Perché una strada così centrale ha un nome così insolito? Quando si cammina in questa via, si possono notare - sul muro degli Uffizi - i resti della chiesa di San Pier Scheraggio: alcuni bellissimi archi della navata distrutta per aprire la strada. La chiesa medievale è stata parzialmente distrutta e parzialmente incorporata nel palazzo degli Uffizi. Nella chiesa si trovava un dipinto, una Madonna con Bambino, attribuito a Cimabue. La tradizione popolare racconta che la Vergine aveva un'espressione molto dolce e sembrava cullare il Bambino Gesù per farlo addormentare. Per questo motivo il dipinto venne chiamato “Madonna della ninna nanna”. Anche dopo l'apertura della nuova strada, la memoria di questa immagine rimase viva. Probabilmente questa seconda storia è meno poetica, ma sappiamo con certezza che l'opera famosa si trova ancora agli Uffizi: chiunque può vedere la Madonna incoronata. È possibile che vi sia stata confusione con un altro dipinto oggi perduto… Come molte altre strade nel centro di Firenze, via della Ninna non ha solo un nome insolito, ma anche una storia affascinante. In questo caso, la storia è legata alla chiesa di San Pier Scheraggio, importante luogo dove anche Dante e Boccaccio tenevano i loro discorsi, ma che venne sacrificato per la costruzione di una nuova società e un nuovo potere cittadino.
